Emancipendence – Party wi a party

Several hundred years ago on August 1[1834] slavery was abolished in Jamaica. Several years after that the island sought independence from British rule on August 6 [1962]. Given these milestones in Jamaica’s history August 1 and 6 are public holidays [Emancipation Day and Independence Day, respectively].

Due to the proximity of these dates on the calendar a long  “Emancipendence” weekend usually results. While Jamaicans “a yaad” and abroad reflect on these achievements, many return to the island to participate in the local party scene throughout this period.

Week/ weekend-long events are common  and despite a few work days coming in between the two public holidays, it’s popular for work to be pretty empty around this time. Let’s get down to business! These are the week/weekdn-long parties that are happening all across Jamaica !
