Emancipendence – Tek een likkle culture

Several hundred years ago on August 1[1834] slavery was abolished in Jamaica. Several years after that the island sought independence from British rule on August 6 [1962]. Given these milestones in Jamaica’s history August 1 and 6 are public holidays [Emancipation Day and Independence Day, respectively].

Some people use the time to party [see Emancipendence party post here], while others decide to use the time to reconnect with their Jamaican roots, or learn more about the rich cultural heritage of the island.

The highlight of the period will be the Grand Gala to be held at the National Stadium on Independence Day [Tuesday, August 6].

Here’s a LOOOONG list of cultural events which will be hosted across the island for the emancipendence period. For more information visit the Jamaican Cultural Development Commission website.
